Shakespeare, Julius Caesar [Elib]
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1599. It is one of several plays written by Shakespeare based on true events from Roman history, which also include Coriolanus and Antony and Cleopatra. Although the title is Julius Caesar, Caesar is not the most visible character in its action, appearing alive in only three scenes. Marcus Brutus speaks more than four times as many lines, and the central psychological drama of the play focuses on Brutus' struggle between the conflicting demands of honor, patriotism and friendship. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. In 2016, celebrations will commence in the United Kingdom and across the world to honour The Bard's 400th anniversary. [Elib]
<p>Inhimillinen murhenäytelmä vallan huumaamasta diktaattorista on samalla koskettava kuvaus yksityisen ja julkisen elämän kipeistä ristiriidoista.</p> <p>CASSIUS:</p> <p>Kumartukaa roomalaiset,</p> <p>kumartukaa, peskäämme kädet hänen veressään</p> <p>kyynärpäitä myöten, ja punatkaamme miekat.</p> <p>Sitten niitä heiluttaen torille, ja huutakaamme kaikki:</p> <p>"Vapaus, vapautus, ja oikeus!"</p> <p> Caesar on päihtynyt vallasta ja kansan ihailusta eikä usko varoittaviin ennusmerkkeihin. Joukko tasavaltaa kannattavia senaattoreita, heidän joukossaan myös Caesarille läheinen Brutus, päättää surmata yksinvaltiaan, jonka epäillään havittelevan kuninkuutta. Murhan jälkeen Roomassa käydään sisällissotaa, kunnes Caesarin uskollinen ystävä Marcus Antonius kukistaa salaliittolaiset. Paitsi poliittis-historiallinen tragedia Julius Caesar on inhimillinen murhenäytelmä, koskettava kuvaus yksityisen ja julkisen elämän kipeistä ristiriidoista sekä vallan himosta ja hinnasta.</p> <p>Lauri Siparin suomennoksessa näkyy teatterialan ammattilaisen kädenjälki.</p> [Elib]
William Shakespearen “Julius Caesar” on todellinen näytelmien klassikko!Tapahtumat sijoittuvat vuoteen 44 ennen ajanlaskumme alkua. Marcus Brutus ja Marcus Antonius juonivat salaliittoa Rooman keisari Julius Caesarin pään menoksi. Näytelmä keskittyy erityisesti Marcus Brutukseen sisäiseen taisteluun – onhan Brutus Caesarin ystävä.Tunnettu sanonta “Sinäkin, Brutukseni” on oletettavasti peräisin Shakespearen näytelmästä. Osa tutkijoista on kyseenalaistanut, kirjoittiko Shakespeare teoksensa yksin vai oliko asialla kokonainen teatteriryhmä. [Elib]

This play stands, not only at the turn of a century but at the point in which Shakespeare emerged as the leading English language writer.William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is widely considered the world's greatest dramatist and is often referred to as England's national poet or the Bard. Most famous for his timeless plays, he also wrote a multitude of poems and sonnets. Shakespeare was the blockbuster writer of his day, his many works concerning universal themes of life, love, death, revenge, grief, jealousy, murder, magic, and mystery. Among some of his most famous are 'Macbeth', 'Romeo and Juliet', and 'Hamlet', but the list is long, and many continue to be studied and performed, both their original form and modern adaptations.
